作詞作曲者不詳のアメリカ民謡。
英語歌詞では元々は、The House of Rising Sunという娼婦の館に罪を背負ったり、売られたりして集まって来た我が身を歌った歌詞です。ボブ・ディランの最初のヒット曲でも有名です。
その後、イギリスのロックグループであるアニマルズが舞台を少年院に変えて大ヒットさせました。
ニューオリンズは、ヨーロッパからの音楽と黒人音楽が出会ってJAZZを発展させた音楽の街でもありますが、歓楽街も盛んで売られたり流れ流れて来た人達を歌ったアメリカの歴史の一部を切り取ったものです。
ニューオリンズやThe House of Rising Sunといった固有名詞を取れば、世界の貧しい暮らしから抜け出ようとしたいた、している人の暮らしを表現できるのではと思い意訳しました。そして、原曲では結局ニューオリンズに戻って朽ちて行くのを暗示した終わり方なのを、ハッピーエンドの方向で希望を垣間見て終わりにする流れにしています。
昔のアメリカ民謡の流れを汲むブルースの歌ですと、Mack The Knife やSt.Louis Bluesなども物語調ですね。
数分で終わる物語。しかも、その時の世相を反映した歌詞。その歌詞の中には歴史の教科書には出てこない時代に埋れていった沢山の庶民の姿が垣間見えてくる気がします。

An American folk song by unknown songwriter.
In English, the lyrics were originally about a person who gathered in a prostitute's house called The House of Rising Sun, where they were slaughtered or sold. It is also famous for Bob Dylan's first hit.
Later, the British rock group Animals turned the stage into a juvenile detention center and made it a big hit.
New Orleans is also a music city where music from Europe and black music met and jazz developed, but it is also a slice of American history that sang about people who were sold and flowed in the red-light district.I thought that proper nouns such as New Orleans and The House of Rising Sun could express the lives of people who wanted to get out of the poor life of the world. And in the original song, the ending implies that it will eventually return to New Orleans and decay, but in the direction of a happy ending, it ends with a glimpse of hope.
Blues songs that draw on the tradition of old American folk songs, such as Mack The Knife and St. Louis Blues, also have a narrative style.
A story that only takes a few minutes. Moreover, the lyrics reflect the social situation at that time. In the lyrics, I feel that you can get a glimpse of many ordinary people who were buried in an era that does not appear in history textbooks.
