Amazing Graceはイギリスの牧師であったJhon Newtonによって18世紀末に発表された讃美歌です。
彼は20代の頃、奴隷貿易に従事していました。
22歳の時、奴隷船が暴風雨に遭い難破しかけた時に神に祈って助かった経験から作った歌だそうです。
牧師になって奴隷貿易反対運動に加わり、82歳で死去する前年、1807年81歳の時、英国国会法で奴隷貿易の廃止が決定されました。 奴隷廃止運動を支えた歌であるとも言われています。
歌詞の中にTen thousands years(一万年)この歌が歌い継がれる様にとあるところを幾千年と訳しましたが、普遍的な信念は色あせないものと思っています。
Amazing Grace is a hymn that was announced at the end of the eighteenth century by Jhon Newton, a British pastor.He was engaged in slave trade when he was in his twenties.At the age of 22, it was a song made from the experience of praying for God when a slave ship was in a storm and wrecked.When he became a pastor and joined the slave trade campaign and died at the age of 82, at the age of 81, 1807, the United Kingdom Diet law decided to abolish slave trade. It is said that it is a song which supported the abolition of slavery movement.
