Yashitaki Mikimoto

Yashitaki ＭIkimoto   太古の昔から、真珠は月の雫とも形容されて親しまれてきた宝石。貝に石などが挟まれて自然に出来るものであったが、日本で養殖技術が開発され、大正時代以降、日本の大きな輸出産業となった。真珠王といわれた御木本幸吉の孫、御木本美隆（ヨシタカ）は戦中の1941年に大学を卒業して家業を継承、世界での真珠販売で名前を知られるようになった。Yashitaki Mikimotoはその真珠王御木本美隆を題名にした曲であるが、ヤシタキとなっており、ヨシタカではない。恐らく、これは口語ではYashitakiと発音されていたからと思われます。英語表現では単語に母音が一つでアクセントが置かれるが、多数含まれることはなく、続けては言えず、アクセントのない平易な言葉の日本語では考えられない事が多い。

Mikimoto Yoshiitaka  the grandson of Mikimoto Kokichi, who was said to be the Pearl King, graduated from university in 1941 during the war and took over the family business, becoming known for selling pearls around the world. Yashitaki Mikimoto is a song titled by the pearl king Mikimoto Yoshitaka, but it is Yashitaki, not Yoshitaka. Probably, this is because it was colloquially pronounced Yashitaki. In English expressions, words are accented with a single vowel, but they are not included in many and cannot be said continually, and are often unthinkable in plain language Japanese without accents.

昔、プロレスの世界でストロング小林というレスラーがいたが、アントニオ猪木と対決して敗れた後に渡米してNYのマジソンスクエアガーデンでメインイベントで当時のWWWFチャンピオンであったブルーノ・サンマルチノと対戦した時に、Strong Kobiyashi （ストロング・コビヤシ）とコールされていました。TV中継で、英語ではアが二回続くのは難しくて発音できないのでコバヤシではなくコビヤシと発音されていますとアナウンサーが話をしていたのを深川は覚えいています。
最近でいえば、WBCの日本代表の4番打者吉田正尚選手のMasatakaが言えずに、MasaとかYoshiと表現された事も記憶に新しいですね。そんな、日本語と英語の違う言語感覚、口語の世界を垣間見ることもできる題名であり、尚且つ、当時日本だけ真珠の養殖が成功していて世界を席巻していた世相を体感する事もできる曲です。

この曲は日本人の名前を題名にしただけあって、戦後の街角に流れていたような東洋的でエキゾチックな曲調となっている。そういった事などからも、この作品は、日本への当時の米国人の思いなどもうかがい知れる貴重な作品で、チャーリー・パーカーが日本について興味を示して和風テイストを取り入れた曲を作っていたというのは、JAZZ史においても世紀の大発見なのかもしれないと思います。また、この曲を世に出すには日本人、そして日本語でJAZZを歌う私がやるしかないと思っておりました。
1番を真珠の輝き、2番は真珠を送る相手への愛情を表現した歌詞を日本語で作詞した。
音符の数、上下動が多く、尚且つ日本人の名前を冠するだけに和風味のエキゾチックな曲。この曲に歌詞をつけて世に出すには日本語で真珠を連想する歌詞にするしかないと考えて作詞した、深川隆成オリジナル作詞での発掘曲。スキャットも和風テイストで、他のBE-BOP調スキャットではなく、ルルル、ラララとラ行を中心にして歌唱しています。

The title of this song is based on the names of Japan people, and it has an oriental and exotic tone that seems to have been playing on the streets after the war. For this reason, this work is a valuable work that shows the feelings of Americans about Japan at that time, and I think that the fact that Charlie Parker showed interest in Japan and composed songs with Japanese tastes may be the great discovery of the century in the history of jazz. Also, I thought that the only way to get this song out into the world was for Japan people and me as a Japanese singer of jazz.

It is an exotic song with a lot of number of notes, up and down movements, and a Japanese flavor just because it bears the name of Japan person. Thinking that the only way to put the lyrics to this song out into the world is to make the lyrics reminiscent of pearls in Japanese, this is an excavation song with original lyrics by Takashige Fukagawa. The scat also has a Japanese taste, and instead of other BE-BOP-style scats, she sings mainly Lululu, La La La as japanese taste.
